KidSpeak™ was created by the child life specialists at TMC for Children with input from the Patient and Family Advisory Committee. The app helps families and young patients become familiar with the facilities as well as to make sense of the complicated medical terminology doctors and nurses sometime use. “This can reduce kids’ anxiety,” said Heather Roberts, child life manager,  “and it helps them feel more comfortable during a stay.”

The app includes:

  • Virtual tours of more than 20 different rooms in the hospital;
  • Over 200 common medical terms are defined in easy to understand language;
  • An interactive digital whiteboard that includes simplified medical illustrations.

Everything in the app is available in both English and Spanish.

The interactive digital whiteboard, or drawing board, features different organ systems of the human body that the child can use to ask questions and doctors, child life specialists and others can use to answer and explain. The drawing board is designed to help kids understand the reason for their illness or hospitalization, their diagnosis, and their treatment.

Load up the free Apple or Android KidSpeak™ app and use it when talking with your children before, during or after procedures to support their understanding of what is happening and so take the mystery and the fear out of their stay.

KidSpeak™  is a free app available in the Apple and Android app stores.
