Community Partners Come Together to Kickoff Drowning Impact Awareness Month
Tucson, AZ- Safe Kids Tucson’s community partners and families affected by drowning will be coming together at a press conference to kickoff the statewide “Drowning Impact Awareness Month” campaign.
The Aug. 1 event begins at 10 a.m. at Mulcahy YMCA at Kino Community Center, 2805 E. Ajo Way.
Arizona ranks second in the nation for child drownings, and summer months bring an increase in incidents. So far this year, there have been seven non-fatal water incidents and one fatal incident involving children in Pima County. All of them were preventable.
For the fourth year, the Drowning Impact Awareness Month campaign, led in Pima County by Safe Kids Tucson, along with local first responders, hospitals and the water safety community, have joined forces to recognize the statewide efforts of drowning prevention. Through funding from community partners and grants, Safe Kids Tucson has worked directly with schools to teach and reinforce water safety messaging.
Speakers at the press conference will include Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, and representatives from Safe Kids Tucson Coalition and the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona. Family members who have been impacted by drowning will also be on hand to share their stories.
