Tucson Medical Center and Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. celebrate continuous extraordinary advancements to TMC's laboratory

Hospital laboratory upgraded in collaboration with Ventana Medical Systems, Inc., a global leader in tissue diagnostics

TUCSON, Ariz., June 19, 2013 – Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Ventana), a member of the Roche Group, and Tucson Medical Center (TMC) will hold a formal ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate TMC’s state-of-the-art laboratory on June 21 at 4 pm. Ventana President and CEO Mara G. Aspinall, TMC President and CEO Judy Rich, and key leadership from both organizations will be in attendance to commemorate the significant enhancement and their continuing collaboration. The ceremony will take place in TMC’s lab.

Ventana, the No. 1 provider of anatomic pathology and histology staining equipment in the world, is proud to partner with its customers to showcase important technological advancements in laboratory equipment automation and cancer diagnostic testing while strengthening the health of the community through increased educational outreach.

“At Ventana, our goal is to be the premier educational partner to our customers for advancing the practice of pathology by demonstrating the value of diagnostics in delivering personalized healthcare,” says Aspinall. “We’ve implemented at TMC what we call the Lab of the Future—meaning, we’ve connected multiple state-of-the-art technologies for the best patient results. We pursue collaborations like this across the globe in an effort to continue to improve cancer patient lives.”

The new VENTANA solution, which includes four instruments and the accompanying software, allows the hospital to perform more in-house tests. This reduces the need for outside laboratories, which can add to turnaround time. The automation also allows for stronger management of patient identification throughout the process. This reduces the opportunity for misdiagnosis and mislabeling. Since one technologist or one pathologist works with one patient at a time through the entire process, there is greater continuity of care.

“This collaboration with Ventana is critical to ensuring our patients receive world class accuracy and precision from TMC’s highly efficient laboratory. This equipment is key to enhancing patient safety and improving quality. It also helps position the hospital for growth while providing exceptional and reliable service to our community. At TMC, we focus on delivering the best diagnostic result for every patient we serve, and this is a giant leap forward,” said Judy Rich, TMC President and CEO.

Although the laboratory was finalized at the end of February, TMC and Ventana are continuing to work on building a long-term relationship that will not only provide premiere cancer diagnostics, but a forum for advancing the practice of pathology with thought leaders across the US and the world.
