Shannon Howe, M.D., is a rheumatologist who finds her patients are unique in their ability to find solutions to their own issues and enjoys working with them to problem solve together. Originally, she went into nursing and beside caregiving, which set her up for being a physician. "I am still awed by the human body," she said. She loves to treat gout, rheumatoid arthritis and those things "that one cannot always see." Dr. Howe has always been intrigued by biology and medicine. In high school, she read the 1974 bookFever! The Hunt for a new killer virus and "was hooked" on medicine. Dr. Howe grew up in Florida and attended the University of Florida earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in nursing. She moved to Madison, Wisconsin where she worked as a nurse eventually attending the University of Wisconsin for her medical degree, graduating in 1989. After residency in Madison, she returned to Florida for her rheumatology fellowship. In 1994, she was recruited to join a group practice in Tucson and her family was willing to leave the humid, buggy South. They have been here ever since.
